An artist’s statement.

How the paintings get made: painting fast, thick paint, loose strokes, and stopping before it gets tidy.

I paint fast.

Working quickly keeps the decisions instinctive. I would rather respond to the surface in the moment than over-plan every mark.

Thick paint leaves a trace.

I like paint to have weight. Dragged colour, raised edges and built-up passages let the surface show how the work was made.

Loose strokes do more.

Most marks are broad and economical. A single confident stroke can suggest more than a carefully described detail.

Up close, it is a mess.

Scrapes, overlaps and broken colour can feel almost chaotic at arm’s length. That disorder is intentional.

Step back and it resolves.

Distance lets the eye join those fragments together. The picture forms between the marks rather than inside each one.

I stop before it gets tidy.

The final judgement is knowing when to leave it alone. I want enough information to hold the image, but enough looseness for it to stay alive.
